I’ve already given birth. Can I still give my baby up for adoption? Is it too late to give my baby up for adoption if I’ve already given birth? I want to safe haven my baby, but I want to know where they are going. We hear these questions often when women reach out to us from the hospital after giving birth. The short answer is no, it’s not too late, and adoption remains an option, even after giving birth.
You still have options
If you’ve just given birth and know you are not in a position to parent, adoption is a loving option. It’s not too late to make an adoption plan for your child. You can call or text us anytime at (850)308-1836 or call toll-free at (888) 883-6830.
Just like for women considering their unplanned pregnancy options before birth, you still have options if you aren’t ready to parent. Our counselor can help you consider all your options, including parenting, foster care, placing your baby with a friend or relative, safe haven abandonment, or adoption.
Should you choose adoption, you can have as much or as little input into the plan as you would like. You can select the family to adopt your child, get to know them, and have an ongoing relationship if you’d like.
Postpartum birth mother benefits are also available up to 6 weeks after birth, if you need assistance with living expenses such as housing, transportation, food, toiletries, and counseling.
Maybe you are considering safe haven abandonment but are concerned you will never know where your child has gone, or you will never get to know how they are doing as they grow up and you want to ensure they do not enter foster care. If so, you may want to consider a hospital adoption plan. Just like in adoption plans made before birth, you can have the same opportunity to be involved in planning where your child will go and to know they are doing well.
