If you are considering making an adoption plan for your baby, you may be asking yourself, “How do I pick the best family for my child?” Choosing adoption for your child is a gift of profound love and selflessness and part of that choice may include picking the adoptive family that will raise your child.
A good way to start on your journey toward choosing an adoptive family is to picture your child’s future. What do you want for them in their lives? Is it important to you that your child has adoptive siblings, or would you rather your child be an “only child?” Is there a certain faith that you’d like your child to be raised in? Do you feel it is important to place your child with a family that cannot conceive naturally, or will you consider families that also have biological children? Would you consider placement with a same-sex couple?
You may also want to spend some time thinking about your own childhood. If you grew up in a family where holiday traditions were important, you may want to select an adoptive family that has their own traditions to pass down. Perhaps you grew up with a pet and are an animal lover, it may then be important to select an adoptive family that has animals. If you would like to have an open adoption, one where you maintain contact with the adoptive family and your child through letters, phone calls, and/or visits, it will be important to match you with an adoptive family with similar goals.
Each placement is as unique as the birth mothers and babies that we serve. We always work toward making placements that are right for both birth and adoptive parents. As a birth mother, you will drive the selection process of an adoptive family. It’s a good idea to spend time thinking about what characteristics are important to you in a family and what things you are sure you are not looking for in a family. Once we have a clear picture of the type of family that you are seeking for your child, we will send you profiles of waiting families that match your criteria and you can select the family that is right for you.
