A good way to start on your journey toward choosing an adoptive family is to picture your child’s future.  What do you want for them in their lives? Is it important to you that your child has adoptive siblings, or would you rather your child be an “only child?” Is there a certain faith that you’d like your child to be raised in? Do you feel it is important to place your child with a family that cannot conceive naturally, or will you consider families that also have biological children? Would you consider placement with a same-sex couple?

You may also want to spend some time thinking about your own childhood. If you grew up in a family where holiday traditions were important, you may want to select an adoptive family that has their own traditions to pass down. Perhaps you grew up with a pet and are an animal lover, it may then be important to select an adoptive family that has animals. If you would like to have an open adoption, one where you maintain contact with the adoptive family and your child through letters, phone calls, and/or visits, it will be important to match you with an adoptive family with similar goals.
