As a Florida adoption law firm, we understand how dealing with an unplanned pregnancy can be stressful. Therefore, it’s understandable that some women put off dealing with it as long as they can. It’s not uncommon for us to get a phone call from a woman who has just given birth and is considering adoption while still in the hospital. In fact, we’ve actually had a woman call us while she was on her way to the hospital, actively in labor, who asked, “can you help me find a family to adopt my child?”
If you would like to place your newborn baby for adoption, it’s important for you to know that Florida adoption is still an option. It might feel strange to make an adoption plan for a baby who has already been born. However, it’s important to remember that adoption is a loving, selfless decision that could provide your baby with a safe and secure home and a life full of opportunity. If you decide to make an adoption plan for your baby, you will be able to choose the right adoptive family, if you want. You can also elect to stay in contact with them throughout the child’s life.
“How Do I Find a Family to Adopt My Child?”
When an expectant mother decides to make an adoption plan with us, we guide her step-by-step through the adoption process. We work with her to determine what she imagines for her baby’s future, including what type of family she wants for her baby. Some example questions we encourage expectant mothers to ask themselves include:
- Do I want a married couple to adopt my child or would I be okay with a single parent?
- Do I want my child to have siblings? How many?
- Does race or religion matter to me?
- How do I feel about choosing an LGBTQ+ family to raise my baby?
Once we have an idea of the type of family that an expectant mother desires, we show her electronic adoption profiles of families that meet her criteria. If none of them feel like a match, we’ll go back to the drawing board. In the end, YOU get to select the family. YOU get to speak with them and meet them if you’d like, so that you may feel assured they are the right family to “adopt my child.”
“How Do I Know The Family I Choose to Adopt My Child is Safe?”
EVERY family presented to an expectant mother has gone through the rigorous home study process and is approved for adoption. As part of the home study process, the family’s criminal and child abuse histories will be checked. Their home will also be inspected to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for children. Each family member will even go through a medical check up, have their references reviewed and attend adoption education courses.
